- Salutary Neglect - The English did not enforce trade regulations. Colonists were free to do as they wished.
- Mercantilism - Exploitation of colonies by for the benefit of the mother country. Britain placed trade restrictions on the colonists to raise money.
- French Indian War - Colonies and Britain fought the natives and the French.
- The war costs the British a lot of money.
- Britain decides to impose taxes on the colonists. Taxes and acts included the Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Stamp Act, Declaratory Act, Tea Act, and the Intolerable Acts.
- Boston Massacre - Provoked British soldiers shoot and kill five people.
